I began working as a career counselor, specifically a job club facilitator, several years ago. I facilitated job search and career planning workshops for about five years, and, in that time, I helped over 2000 clients find work and make well-informed career decisions.
My next job involved working as a vocational rehabilitation case manager. I worked with individuals who had been injured at work and could no longer return to their previous jobs. In this role, I helped injured workers determine career options that were physically suitable and a good fit for their interests and abilities and made sense within their local labor market.
We worked together to develop training plans to ensure clients had all of the skills and education they needed to be competitive in their new field of work, and I supported clients through their retraining programs.
Working as a vocational rehabilitation case manager allowed me to work from home and set my own hours. Given the fact that I had a young family, it was really a fantastic and family friendly way to earn a living. So, when the company I was with lost a major contract, and I found myself out of work, my biggest priority was to find a way to work from home.
I felt that the only way I would realistically find the kind of flexible working conditions that I wanted would be to create them for myself by building my own business, and that’s how Career Choice Guide came to be.
For the past five years, I have made it my priority to be a work at home parent. In many ways, the self marketing techniques and business market analysis skills that I learned in my career counseling training and experience have given me the skills and confidence I needed to launch and build my business.
