If you are emailing an unsolicited resume to an employer, never, ever email the resume as an attachment. It simply won’t be read. It’s fine to email a resume as an attachment if the employer has asked you to send a resume (ideally, in this situation, you’ll ask the employer what format he or she prefers), but if the employer is not expecting your resume, it should not be sent as an attachment.
Email messages from unknown sources, particularly those with attachments are treated with a high degree of suspicion at businesses. Typically an email message from an unknown source with an attachment will be immediately deleted due to fear of viruses. As a result, any unsolicited resume you send in this manner will not be reviewed.
Instead, if you intend to email unsolicited resumes to employers, create a text resume that you can simply copy and paste into the body of your email. It may not look as attractive as a formatted resume, but formatting is irrelevant if your email is never opened.
